Weekly Report for the Week Ending Saturday, December 23, 1944
December 27, 1944
As a result of our conferences with the Maritime Commission concerning the Delta Shipbuilding Company, Negro welders are to be hired January first or second in the New Orleans yard. These persons are to be employed on an integrated basis, according to the Maritime Commission. Mr. Ellinger has been informed of this development and requested to keep in touch with the Maritime Commission officials on it.1
The Navy Department, in a letter dated December 22, states that the Commanding Officer at the Reynolds Corporation plant in Macon, Georgia, has been told to call to the company’s attention, the necessity for complying with Executive Order 9346 in its hiring and training policies. This matter has been forwarded to Dr. Witherspoon Dodge.
The last of the DFO Post Office cases has been sent to the Office of the Postmaster General for investigation. The proposed agreement with the Post Office is now in final form and ready for transmittal by the Chairman.2
On Thursday, December 21, I conferred with Dr. L. S. Hawkins, Chief of Vocational Training for War Production Workers, concerning a new working relationship with the U.S. Office of Education.
