Weekly Report for the Week Ending Saturday, December 16, 1944

OUTSTANDING EVENTS AND PROBLEMS

This week, I communicated with the central office of the Consolidated Vultee Company at San Diego, California, concerning employment at Fort Worth. This action was taken at the suggestion of the War Department. I have been informed that the War Department is continuing its inquiry on this case.1

The threatened strike at the McQuay Norris Company in St. Louis appears to have been averted by coordinated action by the St. Louis and Washington offices. This matter was directed to the attention of the National C.I.O. officials with the hope of getting full cooperation from the local (UAW) union.

The Chief of the Operations Board of the Post Office [Joseph F. Gartland] has acknowledged receipt of the complaints against the Post Offices in Durham, North Carolina; Los Angeles; Houston and Philadelphia. A report on the various complaints is promised.

At the request of Region VII, a contact was made with the War Manpower Commission and the U. S. Office of Education on the establishment of vocational training courses in Macon, Georgia. We have notified the region that the WMC assured us that these courses will get underway within three weeks. The region has been asked to verify this information.

Mr. Hayes Beall is currently working on a digest of transit cases now being handled by the regional offices.
