Subject: Your Memorandum of August 1 on Cases Recommended For Hearing
August 17, 1945
A review of the present situation shows that no useful purpose will be served if hearings were held against Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation in Fort Worth, Texas; George Detterback Company, Chicago, Illinois; Norris Stamping Company, Los Angeles, California; and St. Johns River Shipbuilding Company, Jacksonville, Florida. In each of these cases there are substantial cutbacks or revisions in production which mean that there are now or will be substantial lay-offs. In one case the plant will close entirely.
You also discussed the Southwest mining cases and it is my understanding that Mr. Hunt has recommended that no action be taken on these.
It appears that the machinists cases are still among those in which we could expect some long range results if we obtain satisfactory adjustment, but because of the end of the war, I presume that we will have to restudy our jurisdiction before taking any action.
I have written this memo merely to complete your record.
This memorandum was Mitchell’s response to an 8/1/45 memorandum from Johnson, who, based on the Committee’s recommendations at its 7/21 meeting, suggested that the cases be reexamined to determine whether hearings were then advisable. Even as the Committee clearly was on its deathbed, Johnson explained that it was developing an overall program for the current fiscal year. Further emphasizing the FEPC’s imminent demise, Johnson suggested that the Southwest Mining Cases and the IAM cases also be added to determine whether they too merited hearings. HqR38, Central Files.
