Weekly Report for the Week Ending Saturday, March 24, 1945

IMPORTANT EVENTS AND PROBLEMS

This week the New York office was very helpful in handling problems affecting plants in the St. Louis Kansas City area. Region IX requested that we ask the national office of the Remington-Arms Company to instruct its Kansas City plant that complaints of discrimination involving Negro women should be adjusted. Through Mr. Madison Jones of the New York office, the company took this action and it appears that we may expect adjustment of the cases. Mr. Robert Jones handled the National Carbon problem and also obtained a favorable commitment from the company’s New York office. In the latter case, we are also dealing with the Labor Branch of the Signal Corps in Washington. This case is adversely affected by the General Cable Corporation where we have not yet obtained the transfer of Negro women from the paid training program to the actual production. We are optimistic, however, with regard to the outcome.1

There was considerable activity in the Central Office concerning the Shell Oil case over the weekend. Action taken on this matter is set forth on a separate memorandum.2

The Navy Department and the War Department are continuing action on the Norris Stamping case as requested by FEPC. I believe it is desirable that we continue preparation for a hearing so that no time will be lost in the event that negotiations end in failure.3

The War Department reports that the Consolidated Vultee Corporation has inducted fifty Negroes into a paid training program in the Drop Hammer Department. Additional Negroes are being recruited. I am expecting a written report from the War Department on this matter.4
