Subject: General Cable Case-- 9-BR-267, 9-BR-1155

This will confirm our conversation on March 6, concerning the General Cable case. At that time I informed you that the War Department called and suggested that a meeting be arranged between Mr. Stickgold of the Legal Division and representatives of the War Department to discuss the General Cable Company. The company also was to have representatives at this meeting and it was suggested that it be held in the office of the General Cable Company in St. Louis. The War Department stated that it would be represented in the meeting by Colonel Niehaus of the Signal Corps and Captain Morgan also of the Signal Corps. Mr. A. L. Fergensen, attorney for the company, had come to Washington and indicated a willingness to try and settle this case without a hearing. You agreed that an effort would be made to settle it without having a hearing and called Mr. Stickgold to make this suggestion.

Mr. Stickgold and Mr. Brown met with the company and War Department officials on March 8 and Mr. Stickgold drew up an excellent stipulation which appears to have resolved the problem. Mr. Stickgold has informed me that the commissioner type hearing was adjourned for thirty days in order to give the company time to work out its adjustment of complaints. A Miss Evelyn Johnson of the General Cable’s Long Island Plant flew to St. Louis for the purpose of assisting in the correction of the company’s discriminatory practices.

A copy of the stipulation, case no. 8, as well as Stickgold’s “Statement of Principles,” 2/20/45, is filed with this text. See also related materials in HqR5, A. Bruce Hunt. Stickgold had recently joined the Committee’s legal staff. On the settlement of this case, see the headnote on Major Cases in St. Louis.
