Williams, Wyatt W.

Biography:

(1902-49) black lawyer in Portland, Ore., who assisted Thomas Ray in organizing Boilermakers Union auxiliary A-32, formed to allow blacks access to shipbuilding jobs despite union’s ban on black members. (Many black workers considered such unions both discriminatory and inadequate and protested payment of dues to the auxiliary.) The NAACP’s opposition to the auxiliary angered Williams.
