Biography: 

(1902–55), Graduated Fisk U.; MA, Western Reserve U.; black asst. field employment rep. on Robert C. Weaver’s staff in Negro Employment and Training Branch, OPM (1942); race relations specialist also with WMC and WPB (1943–45); active on FEPC case against Monsanto Chemical Co. (1944). Protégé of W. E. B. Du Bois; staff member (1933), managing editor, The Crisis; resigned when Du Bois did (1934); subsequently became union organizer for ACWA-CIO, ILGWU-AFL, consultant for other unions. After WWII, reporter, New York Times (1945–49); editor, The Pilot, newspaper of Natl. Maritime Union, CIO (1949–55).
