(1900–1957), New York lawyer; chief, Civil Rights Section, Dept. of Justice; handled case against U.S. Sugar Corp., which was indicted on peonage charges (1942). Consulted by Mitchell on wages, working conditions of sugarcane workers in Fla., La., and on advisability of govt. participation in radio broadcast with strikers during Phila. transit strike (Aug. 1944). Born in Minn.
