Biography:
(1905–80), mechanic, longshoreman, and dockworker. In 1934, Pettis organized a local of the ILA at the port of Brownsville, Texas, but when job opportunities in the port increased, the charter was rescinded; white dockworkers organized a new union local and barred blacks from membership, thus effectively keeping them from work.
