(1892–1968), U.S. surgeon gen. (1936–48); longtime employee, Public Health Service; active New Dealer, strong supporter of public health measures. Gave FEPC report on susceptibility of blacks to industrial diseases (1943). Born, educated in Md. MD, Georgetown.
