Palmer, Dwight Rupert Glyndon

Biography: 

(1886–1980), St. Louis–born, New York City–based president, chair, executive committee, board member, General Cable Corporation (1933-52); a military contractor whose white workers in St. Louis went on strike over effort to train black women as electrical workers. Flew from New York, successfully induced employees to accept the workers and return to work (1945). Later, member of President’s Committee on Equality of Treatment and Opportunity in the Armed Services (Fahy Committee) (1948–50); chair, President Eisenhower’s Committee on Govt. Contract Compliance. As CGCC chair, he worked with the NAACP in investigating the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company’s hiring practices.
