Lautier, Louis Rufus

Biography: 

(1896–1962), journalist; assistant to the civilian aide to the secretary of war (1941–43); gave FEPC information on discrimination by USES in New Orleans (1943); War Department representative during Philadelphia transit strike; Washington bureau chief, NNPA (1943–61). In 1947, as a reporter for the Atlanta Daily World, he became the first African American to obtain credentials to the Capitol press galleries. Eight years later, he was the first African American to be admitted to the NPC. He criticized Mitchell’s refusal to speak no more than five minutes at a congressional committee hearing on Taft-Hartley Act repeal.
