Biography:
(1882–1947), attorney and politician; U.S. House of Representatives (1916–17, 1919–20, 1922–33); president, New York City Board of Aldermen (1920–21); mayor, New York City (1933–45); director, Office of Civilian Defense (1941); director general, UN Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (1946–47); member, NAACP National Labor Board (1946–47). In 1947, he accepted an offer to chair an informal group of non-labor organizations brought together to defeat the Taft-Hartley bill.
