Ickes, Harold Le Claire

Biography: 

(1874–1952), lawyer and government official; president, Chicago branch, NAACP (1922–25); U.S. secretary of the interior (1933–46); director, PWA (1933–41); columnist, New Republic (1946–52). In 1939, he arranged for Marian Anderson to sing at the Lincoln Memorial when the Daughters of the American Revolution barred her from performing at Constitution Hall in Washington. He was a strong supporter of civil rights, including President Truman’s FEPC. In 1949, he appeared at the UAW education conference and delivered a speech calling for federal government funding of public education.
