Hastie, William Henry

Biography: 

(1904–76), lawyer; chair, NAACP National Legal Committee; assistant solicitor, Department of the Interior (1933–37); helped draft Organic Act for Restructuring of Governance of Virgin Islands (1936); federal judge, U.S. District Court for the Virgin Islands (1937–39); dean, Howard University School of Law (1939–46); civilian aide to the secretary of war (1940–43); governor, Virgin Islands (1946–49); judge (1950–68) and chief justice (1968–71), U.S. Court of Appeals, Third Circuit. Winner of the 1943 Spingarn Medal, Hastie resigned his position as civilian aide to the secretary of war in protest of the army’s decision to set up a segregated Air Corps technical training school in Missouri. B.A., German and mathematics, Amherst Coll.
