Grady, James Francis

Biography: 

(1903-96) administrator in charge of United Seamen’s Service, War Shipping Administration; FEPC conferred with him on segregation of rest camps for merchant seamen. Informed FEPC blacks could apply to camps outside South and would be given free transportation to them (1945); warned against challenging segregation in Miss. Born in Roxbury, Mass., he was a Boston College graduate who served in the Agriculture Department and the Foreign Service before retiring from government service in 1962.
