(1896–1992), Irish Catholic sociologist; prominent member, sociology department, Catholic University of America (1925–66), chair (1934–64); prolific writer in sociology; member, board of D.C. Urban League; cofounder, Fides Neighborhood House, Il Poverello House, experiments in interracial living, D.C.; recommended by Mitchell for position as hearing commissioner for FEPC (1944). Born in Massachusetts.
