Conyers, Henry, Jr.

Biography:

(1911–2002), veteran. As a civilian instructor employed by the U.S. Army Air Force in Japan after the end of World War II, Conyers complained of widespread discrimination he had faced in the military as a civilian instructor, including being forced to eat alone at a segregated table in the mess hall. He was subsequently assigned to the Sacramento Air Service Command in California and was dismissed from his job there because his superiors refused to give him work for which he was assigned. He asked the NAACP to intercede with the Department of the Army and get him reinstated.
