Carey, James Barron

Biography: 

(1911-1973) chair, National CIO Committee to Abolish Racial Discrimination; national secretary, CIO (1938–42); secretary-treasurer, CIO (1942–55); member, President’s Commission on Civil Rights (1946–47); president, IUERMW, CIO (1949–62); vice president, CIO (1955–65). A member of President Truman’s CGCC, he also participated in a 1946 meeting with Secretary of Labor Lewis Schwellenbach on nondiscrimination by USES offices. Former president, IUERMW; labor representative to Regional Labor Supply Committee, Philadelphia; regional representative, Office of Labor Production, WPB; scheduled for radio talk urging strikers to return to work during Philadelphia transit strike (1944), but broadcast canceled at request of mayor.
