Green, William

Biography: 

(1873–1952), Ohio leader of UMWA (1913–24) and AFL; president, AFL (1924–52); member, FEPC (1941–46). He helped secure passage of New Deal labor legislation, including the Norris–La Guardia Act of 1932, the National Labor Relations Act of 1935, and the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. In 1950, Mitchell urged that he be contacted to oppose legislation seeking to block integration of the Treasury Department’s Bureau of Engraving.
