Biography: 

(1903–85), black lawyer, civil rights leader, local Democratic Party leader, St. Louis; organized first black picket against economic injustice, against local Woolworth store, continued to organize such pickets against other discriminating firms (1931); a leader of St. Louis March on Washington Movement (1942–45); gathered evidence on discrimination in employment, esp. against black women, and requested FEPC hearings in St. Louis; leader, Interracial Council of St. Louis; challenged Jim Crow in interstate transportation (1946); lawyer for NAACP on desegregation cases. Attended U. of Mich., Howard U. Law School.
