Gossett, Ed Lee

Biography:

(1902–90) (D-Tex.), lawyer and judge; U.S. representative (1939–51). He co-sponsored the Lodge-Gossett resolution, which sought to amend the Constitution to abolish the Electoral College and split the electoral vote of each state in accordance with the popular vote. The NAACP opposed the resolution on the grounds that one of its chief purposes was to destroy the political effectiveness of blacks and other minorities holding a “balance of power” in pivotal states.
