Finletter, Thomas Knight

Biography: 

(1893–1980), lawyer; special assistant on international communications to U.S. Secretary of State Cordell Hull; executive director, OFEC (1943–44); consultant at UN conference (1945); chairman, Air Policy Commission (1947–49); Secretary of the Air Force (1950–53); ambassador to NATO (1961–65). In 1951, Mitchell met with Finletter concerning the inability of black airmen at Walker Air Force Base in Roswell, New Mexico, to attend classes mandated by the Air Force but held off base at the New Mexico Military Institute where segregation was practiced.
