Biography:
(1890–1972) (D-La.), lawyer; city attorney, Houma, Louisiana (1913–15); district attorney, Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana (1915–16); delegate, Louisiana constitutional convention (); member, state house of representatives (1924–36); U.S. senator (1936–72). An avowed racist, Ellender was, surprisingly, anti-McCarthy and not a Dixiecrat.
