Dreyfus, Benjamin Ballinger

Biography: 

(1910–83), Calif. lawyer; member, Natl. Lawyers Guild; FEPC special counsel for hearings on railroads, Boilermakers union, L.A. (Nov. 1943). Degrees from Stanford U., Stanford Law. Appeared before the Supreme Court in the Yates case, in which the Court held that the First Amendment protected radical and reactionary speech unless it posed a "clear and present danger". In later years he represented Daniel Ellsberg, Joan Baez, and Eldridge Cleaver.
