Bunche, Ralph Johnson

Biography: 

(1903–71), diplomat, educator, and author; member, U.S. delegation to the first UN General Assembly (1947); assistant director, UN Trusteeship Department (1947–48); undersecretary general, UN (1948–71). He accompanied Count Folke Bernadotte of Sweden to Israel in 1948 in an attempt to mediate between the Israelis and the Arabs; after Count Bernadotte was assassinated, Bunche took over and successfully negotiated a cease-fire and then an armistice and the subsequent end to that particular conflict. In 1950, Bunche received the Nobel Peace Prize as well as the NAACP’s Spingarn Medal, the U.S. Presidential Medal of Honor, and the U.S. Medal of Freedom. In 1954, with President Eisenhower, he spoke at the Freedom Fulfillment Conference.
