Bowles, Chester Bliss

Biography: 

(1901–86) (D-Conn.), administrator, Office of Price Administration (1943–46); FEPC asked him to reaffirm policies of his predecessor on racial discrimination (1943); chair, Economic Stabilization Board (1946); Held several UN posts (1946–51); Connecticut governor (1949–50); ambassador to India and Nepal (1951–53); U.S. representative (1959–61); ambassador to India (1963–69); foreign policy adviser; writer, lecturer on national, foreign affairs. In a 1950 statement, Mitchell said Bowles was part of a “new leadership” that could pave the way for a revitalized FEPC.
