(1913–1993), of Charleston, S.C.; educated at, became principal of Avery Normal Institute, Charleston. FEPC complainant on behalf of black women denied employment at Charleston Navy Yard (1943); reported women were being hired. J.D., University of Chicago (1950), municipal judge, Minneapolis; joined Department of Defense (1963); civil rights director, DOD (1965); acting deputy assistant secretary of defense for civil rights (1968–70).
