Acheson, Dean Gooderham

Biography: 

(1893–1971), lawyer; assistant secretary of state (1941–45); undersecretary of state (1945–47); U.S. secretary of state (1949–53). In an amicus brief written in 1952 for the Brown v. Board of Education case, he denounced segregation and discrimination in terms of their effect upon diplomacy. In 1951, Mitchell conferred with him on ending employment discrimination within the State Department.
